PERSONAL GLYPHS

Glyph Set and Modern Caves

Project Background:
This project explored the foundations of branding through the design of six personal glyphs. These are abstract symbols representing attributes, values, and qualities that define my identity. Inspired by ancient cave paintings and contemporary branding systems, I developed a cohesive visual language rooted in abstraction and reduction. The glyphs were then extended into a chosen application, demonstrating how a consistent identity system can scale across different formats.

Research & Direction:
For my glyphs, I drew inspiration from decorative architectural details and their sense of elegance, as well as from tattoo line work and its expressive qualities. Each glyph is composed of visual elements that represent different aspects of the word, arranged based on how I personally interpret its meaning. The diamond shape at the center represents a person, with the dotted diamond symbolizing myself. Lines flowing inward, outward, or around the figure represent how I visualize the movement of energy. For example, in the glyph representing “respectful,” I placed myself at the center, with lines flowing from another person and back to me, reflecting the idea that when respect is given, it is returned.

Results:
When applying the glyphs to a real-world “cave,” I wanted to place them on an object that reflected the same elegance and beauty I associated with the symbols. I chose a set of gold mirrors for this reason, as they not only carry a refined aesthetic but also serve as a literal reflection of myself. To apply the glyphs, I created stencils and paired them based on shared meanings, then used etching cream to produce an etched effect on the mirrors. Finally, I photographed the mirrors in grass with the sky as the backdrop, creating a contrasting, almost magical setting that emphasized the symbolism and visual impact of the piece.
