GRAVE SECRETS OF DINOSAURS
Book Redesign
Project Background:
This project reimagines a text-heavy book as a visually engaging publication through experimental typography and intentional use of imagery. The focus was on enhancing the narrative while maintaining readability, with design decisions guided by the book’s tone, format, and intended audience. All body copy is the original text, carefully typeset to transform the reading experience without compromising the integrity of the content.
Research & Direction:
From the beginning of this project, I knew I wanted to work with UV light and ink, which is often referred to as invisible markers. I explored different book concepts that would naturally align with this idea and ultimately chose a book about dinosaurs and fossils. This theme reflects the process of searching for fossils and the excitement of uncovering something hidden. I wanted the book to give a similar feeling with the UV light and shining it on the page to find the hidden illustrations.
Results:
The illustrations throughout the book are designed to reflect the content of each chapter or page and are integrated within the text to break up large blocks of copy and create a more visually engaging layout. Because the opening chapter tells a narrative story about dinosaurs while the remaining chapters focus on scientific research, I emphasized this contrast by printing the opening section on toned, aged-looking paper to evoke a sense of the past. The invisible illustrations were hand-drawn using UV markers, with a combination of the marker and a toothpick to achieve fine details. The book was entirely assembled and bound by me.
